South Eastern Regional College (SERC) has secured an Open College Network NI (OCN NI) Centre Learning Grant of £3,000, to help support students with a serenity garden at the college’s Newtownards Campus.

The OCN NI Centre Learning Grants Programme is designed to encourage innovation, enhance learning experiences, and facilitate progression for learners. By supporting innovative approaches and initiatives, OCN strives to create an environment where learners can thrive and achieve their full potential.

Barbara McNeill, Campus Manager, SERC Newtownards Campus said, “We are delighted to have secured this funding, which will be used to develop the facilities for students at SERC Newtownards Campus.

“The creation of a peaceful outdoor space for students will help promote inclusivity, mental rest, and social interaction, which are all critical for personal development. It will serve as a refuge for students from the pressures of learning and life where students can recharge.”

Barbara added, “Research has shown that spending time in nature can lower stress hormones, such as cortisol, reduce anxiety and improve concentration and mood, helping students regulate their emotions and improve their focus in classes following their time in the garden.”

Barbara concluded, “We have consulted with our students on the serenity garden and have incorporated their ideas for an accessible garden which will have dedicated seating and a variety of sensory experiences, including scented flowers and foliage, making for a relaxing atmosphere. It will be a wonderful addition to the facilities we have at Newtownards Campus.”
